Start by examining each row, column, and box to identify which numbers are absent. If a row already contains 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, the only missing number is 3 — and if just one empty cell remains in that row, that cell must be 3.

Using Multiple Constraints Together

Every cell sits at the intersection of a row, a column, and a 3x3 box. Apply all three constraints at once to narrow down possibilities. For example, if a particular 3x3 box is missing the numbers 2, 5, and 8, and one of its empty cells belongs to a row that already contains 2 and 5, that cell must hold 8. The same cross-referencing logic works for columns and boxes alike.

Tracking Candidates

When a cell's digit cannot be determined immediately, note the possible numbers — called candidates — for that cell. As other cells get filled in, some candidates can be eliminated, eventually narrowing each cell down to a single answer.

The Core Rule

Never place a number that already appears in the same row, column, or 3x3 box. Continue applying logic and deduction until every cell is filled according to these rules.
