Classic chess is a two-player board game played on a chessboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. Each player begins with 16 pieces — a king, one queen, two knights, two rooks, two bishops, and eight pawns — and the objective is to checkmate the opponent's king, placing it under the imminent threat of capture with no escape.

The game supports several ways to play: against artificial intelligence, alongside another person on the same device, or against a rival over the network in multiplayer mode. A chess problem-solving mode is also available.

How to Play Classic chess: Checkmate the Opponent's King

The ultimate goal for each player is to checkmate the opponent, meaning the opponent's king reaches a situation where capture is inevitable. Classical chess uses sixteen pieces across six distinct types, each with its own movement rules.

Piece Movement Rules

• King: moves from its current square to any one free adjacent square that is not under attack by the opponent's pieces.
• Queen: moves any number of free squares in any direction in a straight line, combining the capabilities of a rook and a bishop.
• Rook: moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically, provided no pieces block its path.
• Bishop: moves any number of squares diagonally, provided no pieces stand in its way.
• Knight: moves two squares vertically and one square horizontally, or two squares horizontally and one square vertically.
• Pawn: moves forward one space only, except when capturing.
